It's official. The Pepsi sign which has graced the LIC skyline for the past 72 years is moving for a third time, this time to it's permanent resting place. The sign which originally sat atop the Pepsi bottling plant and was moved to ground level in 2004 with the building of Rockrose's East Coast 1, is moving a couple of hundreds of yards north, so as not to obstruct the view from The View (Rockrose's new condo on the Waterfront). The new foundation will be laid, pilings piled, and then the sign will be moved one letter at a time. Some of the letters may undergo restoration, and the actual letters are set to start moving by mid-September. The entire process should take 6 months.
In other big news on the LIC coast are that plans are in the works for another Rockrose tower on the north end of their Queens West lot, right next to Anabel Basin. The 390 foot tower will have approximately 750 units and will feature even more amenities that East Coast 2 if you can believe it. Such amenities will include beach volleyball, pool, tennis courts, and a natural lawn amphitheater on the roof of the abutting garage. Ground should be broken in January and the project should be complete by Summer 2010. Details are still relatively hard to come by, but I will relay them as soon as they come available.
Update- "The Market", the expansive gourmet supermarket LIC has been waiting for should open between July 31st and the end of August. The Duane Reade is expected to open a couple of weeks later.
Update- "L Haus" condo is expected to open in September with prices around $750-$775 per square foot. There will be a 10,000sf landscaped lawn and patio on the interior portion of the L as well as 5,000sf of indoor amenities including club room, yoga room, meditation center, and media room. Private rooftop cabanas will also be available (for sale).

Do you have any word on The View. How are sales going and at what price? Very little information is out there on this project. Why is there no marketing for this project?
The View is moving along. They have been in soft open mode for a while now. I think Rockrose figured that the Summer would be quiet, so they wouldn't blow big bucks til it's offical launch in the fall. Even though it is a soft open I don't think they were happy with the on-site's performance. Rockrose moved their own people into the sales office 2 weeks ago, and sales have picked up from what I am hearing. Prices have not been adjusted, but I think they are receptive to offers.
I think they are looking to get 20%or better sold then launch officially.
Maybe now they will leave it on all night like they used to! Nothing like coming home across the 59th street at 3 in the morning and seeing that sign all lit up. I was heart broken when I came hom eone night at 1 am and the sign was off because of the stupid highrises.
There are so many apartments being completed in LIC right now that it is hard to see how anyone in their right mind would start a new project there, no matter how great the views are.
This project will just contribute to the glut.
#4, you don't understand the LIC market. The whole area is new. The new developments are feeding on each other and creating a new neighborhood. The more people move in, the more developed the neighborhood becomes and it will attract even more people.
Can't wait for The Market and DR to open! Thanks for the update.
is East Coast 4 going to be condo or rental? Any word yet? Thanks!
EC4 will be a rental.
I can't wait for The Market and DR either!
God, why is almost everything on the LIC waterfront a rental? This whole freakin' area is going to be a rental neighborhood, with no sense of community, just frat boys (and girls) boozing it up all day and night. Ugh.
Exactly how far North is the Pepsi sign moving? How many yards is "a few hundred"? My view from Manhattan depends on this.
I notice the sign is back and much more red than before; however, so far, we are missing the neon glow and reflection on the river at night. Anyone know what's happening with that?
